Definition of CRAO?

A

Sudden persistent visual loss caused by embolus/emboli from heart or carotid artery

A
  1. RAPD positive
  2. Cherry red spot at fovea
  3. Retinal pallor
  4. Attenuation of artery
  5. Embolus in retinal vessel

Management CRAO?

A
  1. Hyperventilate the patient- CO2 95%
  2. Digital ocular massage
  3. IV acetazolamide (decrease IOP)
  4. Investigate the cause
  5. Treat underlying cause to prevent CRAO in other eye
