What were the causes of WW1?
Treaty of Versailles Hitler's aims Hitler's actions weakness of League of Nations policy of appeasement nazi-soviet pact American isolation Japanese aggression
What was the weakness of the league of nations?
The league of nations was set up after WW1:
to promote international cooperation and to achieve international peace.
But the league of nations failed to stop Hitler, Japan or Mussolini. The league had a number of weaknesses:
America did not join the league.
Decisions of the league had to be unanimous (all agree) so it was often difficult for the league to agree on what to do.
The league had no army to enforce its decisions. It relied on economic sanctions (block trade).
What was the Nazi-Soviet pact of 1939?
Nazis and Communists were bitter enemies. But Hitler and Stalin didn’t want to fight each other yet. So they signed the nazi-soviet pact in 1939.
They agreed to a ten-year non-aggression pact.
They also secretly agreed to divide Poland between them.
The pact meant that Hitler could attack Poland without having to fight the soviet union. It also meant that Stalin could prepare for a future war with Hitler.
What was American isolation?
America did not join the league of nations after world war 1. The country stayed isolated from conflicts around the world, even though America was the most powerful country in the world at the time. In this way, America hoped to avoid another world war. However, America was forced to take action because of the Japanese expansion in Asia.
