Restrictive lung disease Flashcards
1
Q
Interstitial lung disease
A
- Interstitial - lung tissue is damaged, hard and stiff
- Won’t easily allow air to enter during inhalation
- reducing lung volume
2
Q
Two types of restrictive lung disease
A
- Interstitial lung disease
2. Extrapulmonary lung disease
3
Q
Extrapulmonary lung disease
A
- Extrapulmonary
- structures around the lung are damaged
- prevents chest expansion
4
Q
Interstitial lung disease types
A
• Pneumoconiosis -occupation exposure of toxins
- triggers immune response to damage lung tissue
- Sarcoidosis - systemic disease where immune cells form granulomas in lymph node and hilum of lungs
- Hypersensitivity pneumonitis - healthy lung tissue is replaced by fibrosis
5
Q
Impact of interstitial lung disease
A
- Widespread vasoconstriction
• Increased resistance
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Right side heart failure
6
Q
Extra pulmonary causes
A
- Pectus escavatus
- Obesity
- Pleural effusion
- Myasthenia gravis - destroys neurons at neuromuscular junctions
7
Q
Symptoms of interstial lung disease
A
- Cough
2. Shortness of breath
8
Q
Diagnosis of interstitial lung disease
A
- Spirometry
- Decreased
• TLC
• FVC
• FEV1 - Increase/normal
• FEV1:FVC - FVC is reduced more than FEV 1 bcos fibrotic lung provide elastic recoil so air pushed out faster
9
Q
idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
A
• group of disease leading to interstitial lung damage and fibrois
10
Q
Pathophysiology of pulmonary fibrosis
A
- lung tissue become thickened and stiffened
- Scar tissue called fibrosis forms
• Increases thickness of alveolar- capillary
11
Q
Clinical features of pulmonary fibrosis
A
- Dry cough
- Shortness of breath
- Clubbing
- Fine inspiratory crackles in the lung bases
