Obstructive sleep apnea Flashcards
1
Q
Obstructive sleep apnea
A
- Obstruction of the upper airways during sleep
- More ovbious at night as hormonal around the airways cause muscle to become relax slightly during sleeping
- Less able to keep airway open
2
Q
Causes of sleep apnea
A
- Allergies
- Swollen adentoid tonsils
- Severe underbite
- Overweight - excessive fat tissue around the neck
3
Q
Central sleep apnea
A
disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep
Brain stops making effort to breathe
4
Q
Rhythm of central sleep apnea
A
- Hyperpnea - directs lungs to hyperventilate by increasing resp rate
- Hypocapnia - rapid breathing results in drop in blood co2 levels
- Apnea - when blood CO2 levels fall behind crtain threshold, no effort made to breathe
- Hypercapnia - CO2 levels rise above normal levels
Body goes between making no effort to breathe and hyperventilation
5
Q
Symptoms of sleep apnea
A
- Snoring
- Choking during sleep
- Excessive daytime sleepiness due to fragmented sleep
- Nocturia
6
Q
Narcolepsy pathophys
A
inability to regulate sleep/wake cycles
- Autoimmune condition damages neurons which branchto lateral hypothalamus and secrete orexin A and B
- Orexin A and B stimulate wakefullness in this area of the brain
- Prevents sleep symtpoms and inappropriate transitions into seep
7
Q
Symtoms of narcolepsy
A
- Fall directly to REM sleep
- Cataplexy - strong emotions induce transient muscle weakness
- Sleep paralysis
- Hypocopnic hallucination
8
Q
Non resp sleep disorders
A
- Narcolepsy
- Restless leg
- Parasomnia
