Bronchiectasis Flashcards
1
Q
Bronchiectasis
A
- Chronic inflammation of bronchi causes it to get damaged and dilated
- Mucus plugs form
- Obstructive lung disease due to mucus
2
Q
Causes of bronchiectasis
A
Anything which causes chronic inflammation
- Ciliary Dyskinesia - cilia do not move normally, trapping mucus and bacteria in airways
- CF - mucus sticky and hard to sweep
- Airway obstruction - tumor etc prevents mucocilary escalator clearing out mucus
3
Q
Chronic inflammation
A
- Immune cells release cytokine
- Cytokines damage cilated epithelial cells
- Destroy elastin fibres in walls of airways
- Overtime airways become dilated and clogged with mucus
- Fibroblasts come in and deposit collagen
LESS ELASTIC AND MORE STIFF
4
Q
PULMONARY HYPERTENSION
A
- Overtime lung function declines and there is hypoxia
- Pulmonary arterioles constrict
- Widespread damage means widespread constriction
- Increased vascular resistance
- Hypertension
- Right ventricular hypertrophy
5
Q
Symptoms
A
- Wheezing and coughing
- Shortness of breath
- EXCESSIVE SPUTUM PRODUCTION
- Long term hypoxia - digital clubbing
6
Q
Clinical findings
A
- Wheeze - narrowing of airways due to mucus plugs
2. Coarse lung crackles on inspirationa + expiration
