Pneumothorax Flashcards
1
Q
Pneumothorax pathophys
A
- Seal of the pleural space in punctured
- Air moves in from the outside
- Pressure in pleural spce goes from -5 to 0, no longer negative pressure
- Lung pull inwards and collapse and chest pulls outwards
2
Q
Impacts of pneumothorax
A
- Reduction of Oxygen taken in by collapsed lung and build up of CO2
3
Q
Pneumothorax
A
air in the pleural space
4
Q
Spontaneous pneumothorax
A
- Bullae form when alveoli develop a tiny leak and air enters lung tissue
- Bullae - large air pocket forms on the surface on the lung
- Bullae breaks and forms a large hole in the visceral pleura
- Air enters directly in the pleural space
5
Q
Primary spontaneous pneumothorax
A
forms in the absence of any underlying condition
- thin, tall adolescent male who is holding breath and creating alot of internal pressure
6
Q
Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax
A
• Underlying condition
e.g. Marfan’s syndrome, Cystic fibrosis, Emphysema, Lung Cancer
7
Q
Traumatic pneumothorax
A
- Trauma such as gunshot or stab wound rips through parietal pleura
- Air is allowed to enter from the outside
- Air enters directly into pleural space
8
Q
Tension pneumothorax
A
- One way valve for air to flow into pleural space
- Air can enter but cannot leave
- Overtime air builds up and there is increase in pressure
9
Q
Symptoms of pneumothorax
A
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Compresses the heart -> reducing cardiac output 4. lungs making them dyfunctional
- Shift trachea - tracheal deviation (tension pneumo)
10
Q
Signs of pneumothorax
A
- Ausculatation - reduced breath sounds
2. Percussion - hyper resonance
11
Q
Diagnosis
A
- X-ray or CT
12
Q
Treatment
A
- Needle/Chest tube to provide escape route for air
