What is Rule 19?
Conduct of vessels in res vis
When does Rule 19 apply?
When navigating in or near an area of res vis
Can you still use manoeuvring signals when in restricted visibility?
No as, depending on the type of vessel they will be sounding the correct fog signal
What action will you take for a vessel FWD OF THE BEAM?
Rule 19d(i) SO FAR AS POSSIBLE, Avoid altering my course to port for a vessel fwd of my beam unless the vessel is being overtaken
What action will you take for a vessel ABEAM or ABAFT THE BEAM?
Rule 19d(ii) SO FAR AS POSSIBLE, avoid altering towards a vessel abeam or abaft the beam
You’re in restricted visibility and you’ve heard a fog signal forward of your beam but haven’t detected a target on the radar, what action will you take?
This means that a vessel could be 2 miles away or less. Therefore, I will reduce my speed to a minimum to maintain my course or I will take all way off and navigate with extreme caution.
There is a target on your port bow and a target on your starboard quarter, what are your actions?
As per rule 19d(i) so far as possible I should avoid altering my course to port for a vessel fwd of my beam however and as per 19d(ii) so far as possible I should avoid altering my course towards a vessel abeam or abaft by beam. Therefore, I would slow down or because the rule states “so far as possible” I could still alter course in this situation and I would choose to do so where there is the most sea room.
