What is MLC?

A

MLC is the Maritime Labour Convention it was introduced in 2006 by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). It provides an international standard for seafarers minimum working and living rights.

Key Parts:

  • Minimum requirements (age 16 and 18 to work nights, medical so your ENG1, training quals)
  • Seafarers Employment Agreement (SEA)
  • Hours of Rest
  • Wages
  • Minimum employment conditions

What are the minimum hours of rest?

A

10 in any 24 hours period - and one of these rest periods must be at least 6 hours long
77 hours in any 7-day period
The crew called out of rest period for drills are entitled to a rest period to make up for it.

What is in a Seafarers Employment Agreement SEA?

A

SEA is a contract between the seafarer and the shipowner that provides fair living and working conditions. It includes things such as;

  • Wages
  • Hours of work
  • Pension benefits
  • Grievance and disciplinary procedures
  • Job description
  • Length of contract
  • Health and Social security
  • Repatriation agreement
  • Standards for food, water, accommodation and laundry
