Restoration Theory Flashcards
Who presented the theory
Oswald(1966)
What is the basis of the theory
That humans and the majority of animals use sleep to repair the body from the activities during the day
What stage of sleep repairs the brain
REM sleep
What stage of sleep repairs the body
Non-REM
What physiological evidence is there
Growth hormone is secreted during non-REM sleep which would support the idea that the body is restored during non-REM sleep
What the physiological evidence to support this
Babies experience a far higher percentage of REM sleep than adults which would support the idea that our brain is repaired during REM sleep as babies need more growth in the brain at that age
What is a weakness of this theory
Clugston and Garlick(1982) showed that the rate of protein synthesis is higher during the day than at night. This then refutes restoration theory as our body would not repair as much during the night as there is a lower rate of protein synthesis
What are the weaknesses of this theory
The restoration of brain tissue during REM sleep would imply that there is a need for a period of calm in order for repair to be carried out however the brain is extremely active during REM sleep
What studies can be linked to restoration theory
Clugston and garlick(1982), horne and harley(1988), shapiro et al(1981).
What would the body carry out during sleep
Essential repairs
Removing waste from muscles
Replenishing neurotransmitters or energy in our nervous system
