The conscious level

The preconscious level
What is the third level of the mind
The unconscious level
What is the unconscious level
All feelings, thoughts, urges and memories that are outside of our conscious awareness and most of these are unpleasant such as pain anxiety or conflict
How does the unconscious level affect us
It influences our behaviour even though we are not aware of it such as the unconscious mind repressing problems
How does the unconscious level affect our dreams
Many repressed problems will appear in dreams
What is the preconscious mind
Consists of anything that could be brought into the conscious mind, most of our memories about ourselves are our lives are preconscious. It suggests that we are able to explain and remember the content of dreams
What is the conscious mind
It contains all thoughts, memories, feelings and wishes that we are aware of at anytime. This is the aspect that we can think and talk about rationally
What is an ID
The primitive and instinctive component of our personality
It is the impulsive and unconscious part of our psyche that responds directly and immediately to our impulses
It operates on pleasure and that every wishful impulse should be satisfied immediately regardless of consequences
What happens to our ID during sleep
It becomes dominant and reveals itself in dreams. This means that any unconscious desires are revealed
What is our superego
The superego incorporates the values and morals of society which are learned from caregivers and others
When do we develop our superego
Between ages of 3 and 5
What is the superegos primary function
To control the ID’s impulses which are undesirable such as aggression
What happens to the superego during sleep
It cannot control the ID because we are in a altered state of consciousness
What is the ego
The ego is developed to mediate between the unrealistic ID and the external world. It is the decision making component of our personality
