Dement and kleitman in 1957
What was the aim
To understand the function of REM sleep and wether eye movements are connected to the content of dreams

They were asked to abstain from alcohol and caffeine, after they slept they had a polysomnography. Electrodes were connected near the eyes to register eye movements and on the scalp to register brain waves during sleep. They were then woken at various times during the night by a loud doorbell noise and reported to a recording device wether they had been dreaming and the content of the dream.
Findings
REM periods were observed and participants mainly reported dreaming after their REM sleep and a correlation between time in REM sleep and time spent dreaming
Conclusion
