What is first aid?
It is when you provide immediate treatment to an individual to preserve life.
Environments are legally required to have individuals who are trained and able to administer first aid.
This may be the only intervention required depending on the situation or is offered until emergency services arrive and take over (e.g serious incident).
What are the 3 P’s?
Preserving Life= carrying out emergency first aid procedures that don’t place anyone in danger.
Preventing Deterioration= preventing further harm to casualties or their condition worsening.
Promoting Recovery= getting medical help quickly and staying with the individual until help arrives.
What is a primary survey?
It is the quick way to find out how to treat any life-threatening condition a casualty may have in order of priority.
What does DRSABCCD stand for?
Danger= check for danger to yourself, bystanders and patients.
Response= check for response, talk and touch.
Send for Help= call for an ambulance.
Airway= clear and open airway. Adults/Children= full tilt.
Infants= neutral head position.
Breathing= look, listen and feel for breathing.
Circulation= check for any signs of external bleeding.
CPR= performs 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
Defibrillation= attach automatic external defibrillator (AED) as soon as possible and follow the prompts.
What are the key points of a first aider?
You need to be fully trained and aware of these responsibilities you have.
You may be called on to deal with a wide range of situations.
You need to be able to act in an efficient and appropriate manner.
