What is an accident?
It is an event that results in injury, ill health or loss of life.
It is not intended.
What is an incident?
It is an event that doesn’t result in harm, but has the potential to do so.
It is known as a near miss.
What is an emergency?
It is a serious unexpected event that requires immediate action to be taken.
What are examples of what organisations should respond to?
Accidents
Exposure to injections
Exposure to chemicals
Spillages
Intruders
Aggressive and dangerous encounters
Fire and floods
Loss of water supply
Other critical incidents
(power cut, gas leak or bomb threat)
How should organisations respond to these?
Reporting of accidents
Evacuation procedures
Follow-up review of critical incidents and emergencies
Report to relevant authorities
(HSE, RIDDOR, police or social services)
