What is a hazard?
It is anything with the potential to cause harm.
What is a risk?
It is the chance of harm occurring.
What are the 9 types of hazards?
Environmental= wet floors, uneven surfaces.
Biological= bodily fluids, waste.
Chemical= hot oil, unlabelled cleaning fluids.
Psychological= stress, tiredness.
Physical= noise, radiation.
Musculoskeletal= manual handling.
Working Conditions= poor lighting, temperature.
Working Practices= long hours, lack of training.
Lack of Security= broken locks, faulty smoke alarms.
What effect can these hazards have?
Environmental= injury.
Biological= infections, illness.
Chemical= harm.
Psychological= distress, challenging behaviour.
Physical= illness, distress.
Musculoskeletal= injury.
Working Conditions= illness, distress.
Working Practices= low morale, harm.
Lack of Security= injury, harm.
What is a chemical hazard?
Any substance that can cause harm primarily to people.
What is a psychological hazard?
Any hazard that affects the mental wellbeing or mental health of a worker.
What is a physical hazard?
A factor within the environment that can harm the body without necessarily touching it.
What are the potential impacts of hazards?
Injury or harm.
Illness.
Financial loss.
Poor standards of care.
What are the 5 types of settings?
Health= GP surgery, hospital.
Care= residential care home, individual home.
Childcare= nursery, school.
Public= shopping centre, park.
Transport= minibus, ambulance.
What is clostridium difficile?
A bacterium agent that cause infections in the digestive system.
What is legionella bacteria?
A type of bacteria that causes legionnaire disease that affects the lungs.
What is methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)?
A bacterium agent that causes infections in different parts of the body.
What is the health and safety executive?
The national regulator of health and safety for settings in the UK.
