Respirtion Flashcards
What are the raw materials for respiration?
Glucose and oxygen
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration ?
Glucose+Oxygen—– 38 ATP+Water+Carbon Dioxide
What is produced during aerobic respiration?
Through a series of enzyme controlled reactions carbon dioxide and water are produced
From the energy released in aerobic respiration what bah happens?
The energy released is used to regenerate ATP from ADP+ Phosphate
What is ATP?
Short term store of chemical energy
What can ATP later be broken down to?
ADP+Phosphate and the energy released can be used for cellular activities
State some cellular activities that the energy released can be used for?
Active transport, muscle cell contraction, cell division, protein synthesis and the transmission of nerve impulses
Where does aerobic respiration start?
In the cytoplasm where glucose is broken down, via pyruvate, to carbon dioxide and water and the energy released yields 38 ATP per glucose molecule
Where is the process of aerobic respiration completed?
If oxygen is available, in the mitochondria
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration in the presence of oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that is not in the presence of oxygen
Where does respiration end if there is no oxygen?
Fermentation continues in the cytoplasm
What are the word equations for the fermentation a pathways in an animal cell and a plant+yeast cell?
Animal cell: glucose(via pyruvate)—–2ATP+ lactic acid
Plant+Yeast cell: glucose(via pyruvate)—–2ATP+Ethanol+Carbon Dioxide
How can the rate of respiration be measured?
Respirometer
