Reproduction Flashcards
Describe sex cells
They have a single set of chromosomes and are haploid
Describe most cells in the body
They have a double set of chromosomes and are diploid
What are the make gametes in animals called
The sperm
Where are the sperm made ?
In the testes
Describe the sperm cell
Head containing genetic info in the nucleus, enough food to last them three days and a tail to swim in search of an egg
What are the female gametes called in an animal
Egg or ova
Describe an ova
Bigger than sperm as they have to have enough food for the development of the embryo
Where are female gametes produced?
The ovary
What is the male gamete called in plants ?
Pollen
Where is pollen produced ?
Stamen
What are the female gametes called in a plant and where are they produced?
Ovules and are produced in the ovary
Describe the process of reproduction
The nuclei of the male and female gamete fuse to produce a zygote. The combined info of he two haploid cells allows the zygote to have two sets of chromosomes and is therefore diploid
