Q

Describe the process of mitosis

A
  1. Uncoiled chromosomes double to form two identical chromatids which are joined together
  2. Chromosomes become short and the nucleus membrane disappears
  3. Chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
  4. Spindle fibers attach themselves to the cells and pull them apart to the poles of the cell
  5. Once at the poles the chromosomes become long again and are surrounded by a nuclear membrane
  6. Finally, the cytoplasm divides to form two identical daughter cells

Q

Why is mitosis important ?

A

To maintain the chromosomes compliment and so that a cell has a full set of information for growth and development and so it can carry out normal cell functions

Q

During cell culturing, how is cell contamination prevented?

A

By using aseptic techniques such as washing hands before and after the practical, work should be carried out beside an up draught of hot air from a Bunsen and all equipment must be sterilized before and after use.
