Respiratory volumes Flashcards
What is residual volume?
Volume of air which is not actively moved
What is tidal volume?
In normal quiet breathing it is the amount of air exchanged with each breath.
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
Ability to inspire more than 500 mls of air
What is expiratory reserve volume?
Forced expiration that will vent an extra 1200mls of air above the tidal volume:
What are the 4 lung capacities and their volumes?
- functional residual capacity. 2400ml
- inspiratory capacity. 3600ml
- Vital Capacity 4800ml
- Total lung capacity. 6000ml
What is functional residual capacity?
Residual volume + expiratory reserve
What is inspiratory capacity?
Tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume.
What is vital capacity?
Inspiratory reserve + tidal volume + expiratory reserve volume
What is total lung capacity?
Total from all volumes
How much volume remains in air passages and what is it known as?
150mls
Anatomical dead space
What is minute volume?
Tidal volume X by breathing rate per minute
What is alveolar ventilation rate?
Gas available to the alveoli per breath X by resp rate
What does FEV1 mean?
Force expiratory volume in one second and is a measure of ease with which air is expelled from the lung
What are the four lung volumes and what are their capacities?
- Residual volume- 1200ml
- expiratory reserve volume - 1200ml
- Tidal volume- 500ml
- Inspiratory reserve volume- 3100ml
