Respiratory System Drugs Flashcards
3 Important Principles of Respiratory Therapeutics
Control of secretions
Control of reflexes
Maintenance of normal airflow
Antitussives
Indicated for chronic, unproductive coughs
Ex. Butorphanol, Hydrocodone, and Temaril-P
Expectorants
Increase the volume and fluidity of respiratory secretions
Ex. Guaifenesin
Mucolytics
Reduce viscosity of purulent and nonpurulent secretions
Ex. Nebulizer acetylcysteine
Bronchodilators and Examples
Reduce bronchospasms by causing expansion of the bronchitis in the lungs
Albuterol-stimulate beta2 receptors in the lung
Theophylline and aminophylline-cause relaxation of smooth muscle in the lungs
Other Drugs Used to Treat Respiratory Problems
Antihistamines- cause bronchodilation to help prevent anaphylaxis
Corticosteroids- help with severe inflammation of the airways
Diuretics- help decrease fluid on the lungs
Oxygen administration- helps when pt is unable to maintain normal oxygenation
