Respiratory system Flashcards
What are the two types of respiration?
Cellular or external
What is the respiratory system made up of?
Nose, Trachea, Bronchi, Lungs, Alveoli
What protects the respiratory system?
Cilia hairs, Length of respiratory tract, Mucus, Entry of food prevented by epiglottis
What does the nose do?
air enters- muscous traps particles- air goes into nasal cavity- air is warmed and humidified- serous gland gets rid of bacteria- air moves from nose to pharynx
What are the 3 sections of the pharynx called?
nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx
What does the larynx do in the respiratory system?
protects trachea, produces voice
What is the larynx made from?
cartilage, muscle and other tissues
What does the trachea do?
connects larynx to bronchi in centre of neck
How many bronchi’s are there?
2
What does the bronchi branch into?
bronchioles
How many lobes does the right and left lung have?
Left: 3
Right: 2
Where does the heart sit in relation to the lungs?
In the cardiac notch
Which side of the lungs do 85% of foreign bodies/food/drink end up?
Right bronchus
What are respiratory bronchioles covered in?
Alveolar sacs
What do alveolar sacs allow?
Gases to pass through them
