Nervous System Flashcards
What does the CNS include?
Brain and Spinal Cord
What does the PNS include?
Cranial and Spinal Nerves (Motor and Sensory)
What is the negative resting potential for a neuron?
-70mv
At what charge level do neurons become excitable?
-50mv
What kind of ions rush in to depolarise the cell?
Positive sodium ions
What is action potential?
When cells become depolarised and become more positive inside than outside
How does a cell restore itself after action potential?
Positive potassium ions flow out of channels and restores negative charge outside
What is the myelin sheath?
Schwann cells that block ion movement so action potential has to jump from nodes of ranvier
What are the 2 types of synapses?
electrical and chemical
For chemical transmission, what type of voltage gated channels are required?
Calcium channels
What neurotransmitter is released into synaptic cleft in chemical transmission?
Acetycholine
Are all neurotransmitters taken by postsynaptic terminal?
No, some diffuse, reuptaken or degrade
What are dendrites?
Short threadlike and conduct impulse towards cell body and to other dendrites when action potential occurs
