Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What are the two parts of the cardiovascular system?
Heart and blood vessels
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins and capillaries
What do arteries do?
carry oxygenated blood away from heart
What do veins do?
carry deoxygenated blood towards heart
What do capillaries do?
carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
Do arteries have high or low pressure?
high (thick muscular walls)
Do veins have high or low pressure?
low (thinner walls)
Do arteries have valves?
No- just tubes!
Do veins have valves?
Yes- control direction of blood flow- prevents blood flowing backwards
What is blood made up of?
Platelets, read blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin
What is the pulmonary circuit?
blood transported between heart and lungs
What is the systemic circuit?
blood transported between heart and body
What are the 4 chambers in the heart?
x2 atria (thin walled), x2 ventricles (thick walled)
What do the left atrium do?
receive blood from lungs
What does the right ventricle do?
pump blood away to the lungs
What do the right atrium do?
receives blood from the body
What does the left ventricle do?
pumps blood away to the body
What are the atriums made of?
thin cardiac muscle
What is the main artery leaving the heart called?
aorta
What is the main vein entering the heart called?
vena carva
What does the pulmonary artery do?
carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs via the right ventricle
What does the pulmonary vein do?
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
What protects the brain?
the circle of willis, blood brain barrier, rigidity of skull
What are the two types of stroke?
Infarct, haemorrhage
