Respiratory System Flashcards
Components of the respiratory system •7
The nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
Respiratory systems functions
Replace oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the blood, important in the regulation of the acid-base balance during exercise, makes vocalization possible
Pharynx
Muscular membranous tube extending from the base of the skull to the esophagus
Larynx
Organ of the voice, located between the trachea and the base of the tongue
Trachea (wind pipe)
Cartilage and membranous tube extending from the larynx to the bronchi
Lungs
Encased by the rib cage, houses the primary, secondary, and tertiary bronchi, as well as various bronchioles and alveoli
Mediastinum
The space separating the lungs, home to several organs including the heart, aorta, esophagus, and part of the trachea
Bronchi
Two large branches of the trachea leading into the lungs
Bronchioles
The smallest tubes that supply air to the alveoli on the lungs
Alveoli
Microscopic air sacs where gas exchange occurs within the lungs
Diaphragm
The most important muscle of inspiration and the only skeletal muscle considered essential for life
