Respiratory system Flashcards
what is a nasal cavity
a hollow space within the nose
what is a nasal cavity lined with
hair and mucus membrane
what does a nasal cavity allow the nose to do
warm moisturise and filter air entering the body
what does the epiglottis do
seals off the windpipe during eating so food is not inhaled
what two things is the pharynx the passageway for
food on its way to the stomach and for air on route to the lungs
what is thicker in the pharynx than elsewhere in the respiratory tract
the muscular epithelium
what does the muscular epithelium in the pharynx do
protect the tissues from any abrasive and chemical trauma caused by food
what does the larynx allow
air to be directed into the respiratory organs for gas exchange
what does the trachea provide
air to flow to and from the lungs
what is the bronchi the main passageway into
the bronchioles
what is and where is alveoli location
tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles
what do the bronchioles ensure
that incoming air is supplied to the alveolus
what happens at the alveoli
gaseous exchange
