Mechanics of breathing Flashcards
what is the mechanics of breathing also known as
pulmonary ventilation
what is the process of breathing
moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange
what are the two main phases of breathing
inspiration and expiration
what 4 things happen in inspiration
diaphram contraction, external intercostal muscle contraction, pressure decrease, air intake
what is the diaphragm doing during inhalation
a dome shaped muscle, located between the lungs, contracts and flattens . Increases the vertical space within the thoracic cavity
what is the external intercostal muscle contraction doing during inhalation
located between the ribs, contract, pull the ribs upwards and outwards, increases the depth of thoracic cavity
what is the pressure decrease during inhalation
the increase in thoracic cavity volume creates a negative pressure within the lungs
what is the air intake during inhalation
air flows from higher atmospheric pressure outside the body into the lower pressure within the lungs, filling them with air
what 4 things happen in expiration
Diaphragm relaxation
what is the diaphragm doing during exhalation
relaxes and returns to its dome shape, decreasing the vertical space within the thoracic cavity
