Respiratory System Flashcards
Oropharynx
Area directly posterior to mouth
Nasopharynx
Area directly posterior to nose
Pharynx
Both oropharynx & nasopharynx
Larynx
Voice box, contains vocal cords
Cricoid cartilage - ring shaped structure forming lower portion of larynx
Trachea
Transports air to and from lungs
Epiglottis closes over glottis (opening) to prevent food/foreign objects
16 C-shaped cartilage rings
Splits into bronchi (two branches) at lung level
Bronchial tubes
Air passageways inside lung
Nasal cavity
Cleanses, warms, and humidifies inhaled air
Bronchioles
Bronchi splitting and branching out farther into each lung, each branch ends at a group of alveoli
Alveoli
Small sacs where gas exchange (between oxygen and carbon dioxide) occurs
Diaphragm
Divides chest cavity from abdominal cavity, a large muscle controlled by phrenic nerve
Inhalation
Muscles of rib cage & diaphragm contract, diaphragm lowers & ribs move upward and outward, creates negative pressure inside chest cavity pulling air into lungs
Exhalation
Intercostal muscles & diaphragm relax, ribs move downward & inward & diaphragm rises, chest cavity decreases and positive pressure pushes air out
Ventilation
Movement of gases to and from alveoli
Each single alveolus surrounded by pulmonary capillaries, capillaries bring blood to outside of alveoli
Oxygen transferred from air in alveoli to bloodstream, carbon dioxide from bloodstream into alveoli
Respiration
Moving gases (and other nutrients) between cells and blood
Buffer system
Regulates body pH
