Composition Of The Blood Flashcards
Plasma
Watery, salty fluid making up more than half the volume of blood
Red,white blood cells & platelets carried in plasma
Waste carbon dioxide from cells dissolves in plasma to be transported to lungs
Red blood cell
Carry oxygen to tissues, red color provided by hemoglobin
White blood cell
Destroys microorganisms and produces antibodies
Platelets
Membrane enclose fragments of specialized cells, when fragments activated they form blood clots
Blood buffer
Regulation of body pH through chemicals transported in blood
Central pulses
Carotid & femoral, all others are peripheral pulses
Blood pressure
Force blood exerts on walls of blood vessels
Pressure created by pulse (heart contracts) is called systolic BP
Pressure remaining after heart relaxes is called diastolic BP
Ex. 120/80
Perfusion
Adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to cells with removal of waste products
Hypoperfusion
Inadequate flow of blood, not enough oxygen and nutrients transported
ATP
Energy converted from glucose by cells
With oxygen: process called aerobic metabolism
Without oxygen: anaerobic metabolism - less energy more waste like lactic acid, WP make body acidotic
Ventilation perfusion match (V/Q)
Coupling of sufficient amount of air with sufficient amount of blood
Anemia
Reduces number of oxygen carrying red blood cells
