Digestive & Integumentary System Flashcards
Small intestine
Three parts: duodenum, jejunum, ileum
Receives food from stomach, Breaks down food for absorption, nutrients absorbed by body through walls
Large intestine (colon)
Removes water from waste products, anything not absorbed is moved through colon and excreted
Liver
Produces bile (excreted in small intestine to assist with fat breakdown)
Detox harmful substances, stores sugar, assist in production of blood products
Gallbladder
Storage system for bile from liver
Pancreas
Produces insulin (regulates sugar), and juices that assist with protein, carb, and fat breakdown
Spleen
Filters out old blood cells, holds blood reserves in case of blood loss
Appendix
Made up of lymphatic tissue, common cause of abdominal pain, located near junction of small and large intestine
Skin functions
Protection, water balance, temp regulation (blood vessels dilate or contract, sweat glands, fat layer), excretion of salt and excess water, shock absorption minor
Skin layers
Epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous
Epidermis
Four layers/hands & soles of feet have five, outermost layer made of dead skin cells which get replaced, no blood vessels/nerves
Dermis
Rich with blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles
Subcutaneous
Fat and soft tissue below dermis, responsible for shock absorption & insulation
