Respiratory System Flashcards
Prevents food from going into lungs
Pharynx
Windpipe
Trachea
Waste gas you breathe out
Carbon dioxide
Two places air enters your body
Mouth and nose
Large muscle that controls the lungs?
Diaphragm
When somethin irritates your trachea or bronchi
You cough
Two tubes that connect the trachea to the lungs
Bronchi
What is external respiration?
Exchangeof gases in lungs
What is internal respiration?
Exchangeof gases within calls of the body organs and tissues
What is the role of ribs?
Thoracic cage protects the thoracic organs. It help respiration.
How many ribs are there?
12 pair of ribs and are attached to spine
What consists of the upper respiratory tract?
Nose, mouth, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx
What consists of the lower respiratory tract?
Bronchial tree and lungs
What is the nose/nasal cavity?
Mucous membrane that traps dust particles. Small hair(Cilia) moves dust to nose the be blown out.
What is the mouth/oral cavity?
Breathing, expelling carbon dioxide. Pronunciation of words and sound too.
What is the Pharynx?
Where breathing and digestive system share a passageway and has a role in your speech.
What is the epiglottis?
A lid that covers the larynx and trachea to prevent food from entering the lungs.
What is the Larynx?
Voice box/ vocal
What is the Trachea?
Windpipe or airway
What are the lungs?
What are the Bronchi Tubes?
Allows air to flow into either left or right lung. That are C- shaped cartilage rings with smooth muscle
What is the Alveoli?
Air sacs that if destroyed can’t be repaired. Gaseous exchange takes place.
What is Diaphragm?
Muscle separating chest and abdomen
What is respiration?
300-500 million in each lung
Alveoli
Diaphragm relaxes and decreases thoracic space(air flows out) is?
Expiration
Diaphragm contracts and increases thoracic space(air flows in) is?
Inspiration
What is respiration?
Process of breathing(inhaling oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide)
What is internal respiration?
Exchange of gases within cells if the body organs and tissues
What is external respiration?
Exchange of gases in lungs
What is ventilation?
Movement of air
