Digestive system Flashcards
What is the digestive system?
The organ system that takes in food and excretes the remaining waste.
What is the order of the digestive tracts and accessory organs
Mouth, epiglottis, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, (liver, gallbladder, pancreas)
What is the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion?
Chewing and squeezing(mouth, stomach is physical/mechanical and acid breakdown of food(saliva, stomach, small intestines) is chemical digestion.
What is the function on mucus?
Protection from digestive enzymes and material pass smoothly through esophagus.
Digestive tract has layers of _______?
Muscle tissue and nerves.
The digestive system is lined with _____?
Epithelial tissue that is made of different cells like mucus secreting goblet cells.
What are the 4 steps of digestion?
Ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination
Where does digestion begin?
Mouth but specifically the oral cavity where 2 different types of digestion the place(mechanical and chemical)
What is the esophagus?
A narrow muscular tube connecting mouth to the stomach.
What are the muscles in the esophagus called?
Smooth muscle tissue
What is the muscle that moves food along called?
Peristalsis
What is the name of the flap that prevents food from enter trachea?
Epiglottis
What is the stomach?
A place of digestion and can also act as a storage place for food.
What is Hydrochloric Acid?
Is stomach acid that destroys bacteria on food we eat.
How does the stomach work?
The muscles move the food around with the enzymes and acid.
What are the 2 intestines?
Small and large intestines
What do the 2 muscles do the intestines do?
Contract and relax
What is the small intestine?
It’s where most digestion happens. It’s where the most nutrients is absorbed.
What is the large intestine(colon)?
It absorbs water from indigestible food.
What do the accessory organs do?
The liver, pancreas and gallbladder supply digestive enzymes.
What produces bile?
The liver produces bile which is stored in the gallbladder
What does the pancreas do?
It secretes insulin directly into bloodstream and supplies enzymes required for digestion into small intestine.
