Respiratory System Flashcards
System jobs
Breath
Talk & smell
Warms and moistens air to body requirements
Do liver O
Remove waste gases
Protect airway
Helps maintains homeostasis
Parts of system
Nose
Pharynx
Larynx (voice box)
Trachea (wind pipe)
Bronchi
Lungs
Two zones
Conducting zone (nose & bronchioles) forms oath to inhale gases
Respiratory zone (alveolar duct to alveoli) gas exchanges
2 tracts
Upper tract (nose, pharynx & larynx)
Lower tract (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar duct & alveoli)
Nose function
Warm, moisturise, filter air. Hairs and mucus help trap dust
Pharynx
Throat, permits swallowing into the esophagus or gullet
Larynx
Voice box primary function to lower airway by closing abruptly upon mech stim halting respiratory and entry of matter. Also have vocal fold allowing speech and sounds
Trachea
Provides clear airway to and from lungs
Lungs
Remove O from air passing to blood and remove CO2
Bronchi
Primary bronchi splits into L & R to secondary bronchi carry air into lobes. Secondary split into smaller tertiary bronchi in each lobe then split into bronchioles that spread through lungs. Tertiary split into terminal bronchioles
Diaphram
Thin sheet of skeletal muscle forms floor of thorax contract to allow air in and relaxes to allow air out of lungs
Other components
Cilia ( tiny hairs move in wave motion to filter dust)
Epiglottis (tissue flap trachea entrance stop food and liquids into lungs)
Intercostal muscles (between ribs, assist diaphragm)
Muscles that help increase volume of chest cavity
Scalenes
Sternocleidomastoid
Pectoralis major & minor
Serrated anterior
Latissimus dorsi
VO2
VO2 is O amount taken and used by body
Continued aerobic exercise (>1min), longer duration anaerobic fitness & at less degree muscular endurance, VO2 increase linearly with intensity
