Nervous System Flashcards
Main functions
Response to emergency (Sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate and adrenaline production)
Senses (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell)
Two main parts and there roles
Central nervous system (CNS). The brain and spinal cord processes sensory information I.e smell, touch, hearing, sight & taste
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) connect CNS to organs, limbs & skin
Two main parts to PNS and their roles
Somatic system (sends information from senses to brain allowing voluntary reactions).
Contains two major neurone types:
1.Motor neurone
2.Sensory neurone
Automatic system (control involuntary functions I.e breathing, blood flow, digesting).
Further divides into sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
Motor neurones
Carry information from spinal cord & brain to muscle fibres allowing physical control
Sensory neurones
Carry info from nerves to CNS. Then sensory info taken to the brain (smell, touch, hearing, taste, sight)
Sympathetic system
Activate for emergency/environmental threat to mobilise flight/fight/freeze response (accelerate heart rate, increase breath rate, boost blood flow to muscles, sweat, pupil dilating)
I’m response to exercise it enhances cardiorespiratory function and respiratory airways dilate
Autonomic system
Part of PNS controls involuntary responses (breathing, blood circulation)
Parasympathetic nervous system
Responsible for the “rest and digest” activities ie. sex, salivation, tears, urination, digestion, deflection
Nerve tissue
Neurons (nerve cells communicate with body)
1.Afferent = transmit sensory signals to CNS
2. Efferent = transmit signals from CNS to body
3. Interneurons = integrate signals from afferent to efferent
Neuroglia (helper of neurons, protect/feed/insulate neurons)
