Movement Terminology Flashcards
Flexion
Angle between 2 bones decreases (bending)
Extension
Angle between 2 bones increases (straightening)
Horizontal Flexion
Angle between 2 bones decreases in traverse plane (arm out to side bring into midline of body)
Horizontal Extension
Angle between 2 bones increases on traverse plane (reverse of Flexion)
Abduction
Moving limb away from midline (take away)
Adduction
Bring limb close to midline (adding)
Supination
Palm faces up or forward (hand)
Pronation
Palm faces down or backwards (hand)
Elevation
Movement in superior direction (shrug)
Depression
Movement in inferior direction
Eversion
Ankle rolls so sole faces lateral direction (outward)
Inversion
Ankle roll so sole faces medial direction (inward)
Dorsi Flexion
Ankle Flexion, raising toes
Plantar Flexion
Ankle extension, pointing toes down
Lateral Trunk Flexion
Spine moves laterally away from midline (bends to one side)
Circumduction
Joint is pivot of Flexion, Extension, Adduction & Abduction in cone shape movement
Protraction
Anterolateral movement of scapula on thoracic wall allowing anterior movement of shoulder (reaching out)
Retraction
Posteromedial movement with scapula pulled posteriorly and medically towards vertebral column (squaring shoulder)
Medial Rotation
Body segment move so anterior rotates medially towards midline (palm faces towards thigh)
Lateral Rotation
Body segment moves so anterior faces laterally away from midline
Trunk Rotation
Pivoting or twisting movement
Concentric
Muscle flexing working against gravity
Eccentric
Muscle lengthen working with gravity
