Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Cardiovascular (circulatory) system and main function
Composed of heart, veins, arteries, capillaries transporting blood through body
Main function to deliver Oxygen to body tissue while removing carbon dioxide (protect body from infection, maintain body temp, fluid balance)
Blood
Red (carry oxygen)
White (part of immune system)
Platelets (for clotting)
Plasma (blood cells, nutrients, waste)
White blood cells
- Monocytes (help breakdown bacteria)
- Lymphocytes (create antibodies fight against harmful invaders)
- Neutrophils (kill/digest fungi & bacteria, 1st line of defence)
- Basophils (alarm for invaders)
- Eosinophils (attack/kill parasites & cancer cells, help with allergic response)
Heart
4-6L per min 5,700-8,600 per day
2 sides:
1. Atria (2 upper chambers receive blood)
2. ventricles (2 locker chambers pump blood)
Heart sides and function
Right receives deoxygenated blood through veins pumps into pulmonary artery in the lungs to pick up oxygen and offload CO2
Left side receives oxygenated blood from lungs pumps into body via aorta
Artery, veins & Capillaries
Artery carry O blood away from heart, branch into smaller vessels ‘arterioles’ deliver to capillaries
Capillaries are tiny vessels connecting arteries and veins, one cell thick allows water, O, CO2 and other nutrients to move between blood and surrounding tissue
Veins carry deoxygenated blood to heart
