Respiratory System Flashcards
two principal areas of the respiratory centre
- The medullary respiratory center in the medulla oblongata
- The pontine respiratory group in the pons.
Factors which modify respiration
cortical influences; chemoreceptors; limbic system stimulation; proprioceptor stimulation; temperature; pain; irritation of airways; the inflation reflex (stretch receptors).
What does the inspiratory area do?
sets the basic rhythm of respiration.
Roles of the Medullary Respiratory Center (Doral respiratory group DRG) - Active
2 seconds, The Diaphragm contracts and the external intercostal muscles contract during the most active phase, Normal and quiet inhalation
Roles of the Medullary Respiratory Center (Doral respiratory group DRG) - Inactive
3 seconds, The diaphragm relaxes and external intercostal muscles become less active and relax, followed by elastic recoil of lungs
