Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the Paranasal sinuses?
Air-filled spaces surrounding the nasal cavity
What is the Pharynx?
(Throat) Muscular funnel-like structure, extending from the end of the nasal cavity to the beginning of the larynx
What is the Larynx?
(Voice box) A flexible yet tough segment, larynx connects the pharynx to the trachea
What does the upper respiratory tract consist of?
Sinuses, nasal & oral cavity, larynx, pharynx
What does the lower respiratory tract consist of?
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli
What is the trachea?
This is the windpipe. Lets the inhaled air pass through to the bronchi and then into the lungs.
What is the function of the respiratory system?
- Supply oxygen
- Gets rid of CO2
- Includes passageways that allow air to reach lungs
What is the Bronchi?
The trachea splits into two thick hollow tubes
What are Bronchioles?
Narrow tubes which the bronchi branch out into
What are Alveoli?
Small air sacs at the end of each bronchiole
What muscle is used for breathing?
Diaphragm. Divides chest from abdomen
What muscle can be found between the ribs?
Intercostal muscle
What happens during the process of diffusion?
Oxygen moves from the alveoli to the blood through the capillaries
Oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood
Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air in the alveoli
Which protein carries oxygen in blood?
Haemoglobininthe red blood cells
Which lung has 3 lobes?
Right
What is the cardiac notch?
Room on left lung left to give the heart some room
What role does the change in PH have within the system?
Carbon dioxide contains carbon which is acidic. Body detects this and triggers diaphragm to contract to control rate of breathing
What is the pathway which air takes in the respiratory system?
Nose, pharynx, trachea and lungs
Which structure is responsible for directing food and liquids into the oesophagus during swallowing?
Epiglottis
