Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the Perimetrium?
The layer which covers the entire uterus
What is the Myometrium?
The middle layer of the uterus
What is the Endometrium and what does it do?
Innermost layer of the uterus that has glands that secrete a substance to transport sperm and to provide a developing embryo with essential nutrients
What purpose do the ovaries have?
Serve as a reproductive gland that produces ova and also an endocrine gland during pregnancy, prior to puberty and rest of life
Oestrogen
Rapid growth of cell lining of uterus to help implantation
Progesterone
Maintains health of uterus, maintains pregnancy
Gonadotrophin
Stimulates pituitary gland to produce FSH and LH
FSH
Control menstruation and stimulates ovaries to produce eggs
LH
Aids egg maturation and signals to release egg
Gonadotrophin hormone
Releases FSH and LH from the pituitary gland
Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Production of sperm in the testes
Menstration
Series of changes that the endometrium undergoes each month as it responds to changing blood levels of ovarian hormones
3 phases of menstruation
- Follicular/menstrual phase-shredding of the endometrium
- Ovulatory/proliferative phase-follicles mature and thickens the endometrium
- Luteal/secondary phase- development of corpus luteum
