respiratory system Flashcards
describe the structure of the respiratory system
trachea
bronchi
bronchioles
alveoli
describe what happens in the respiratory system
air passes through the nose or mouth to the trachea
trachea splits into two tubes bronchi
bronchi splints into smaller tubes bronchioles
bronchioles end in small bag called alveoli where gasses are exchanged
describe alveoli
large surface area and very thin walls so gasses can pass through them
gas exchange happens process called diffusion
why do the cardiovascular and respiratory system work together
to get oxygen to the muscles and carbon dioxide away from them
what do we inhale
oxygen - 21%
carbon dioxide - 0.04%
nitrogen - 79%
what do we exhale
oxygen - 16%
carbon dioxide - 4%
nitrogen - 79%
what is tidal volume
the amount of air you breathe in or out during one breath
what happens during tidal volume
during exercise tidal volume increases breathe more deeply
what is vital capacity
the most air you could possibly breathe in after breathing out the largest volume of air you can
what happens if you have a larger vital capacity
more oxygen you take in and absorb into your bloodstream the more oxygen you supply to your muscles
describe the action of the diaphragm when inhaling and exhaling
during inhalation diaphragm contracts to expend chest cavity and draw air into the lungs the opposite happens when exhaling
