cardiovascular system Flashcards
what is the cardiovascular three main functions
temperature control - skin cools so the body doesn’t over heat
clotting o wounds - prevents infections
transport of substances - oxygen carbon dioxide
what is the cardiovascular three main parts
heart blood and blood vessels
describe the left side of the heart
oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
left side is thicker as it pumps blood to the whole body
describe the right side of the heart
deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium through vena cava
smaller as it pumps it just to the lungs to become oxygenated
describe an artery
thick muscular carries blood at high pressure away from the heart
describe a vein
thinner walls and less muscle so carry blood at a low pressure carry blood into the heart
describe capillaries
exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide very thin walls so substances can easily pass through
what are red blood cells
carry oxygen so it can be used to release energy needed my muscles in excercise
what are white blood cells
fight against disease say healthy and form well
plasma
carries everything in the blood stream includes blood cells digested food eg glucose and waste eg carbon dioxide
