Respiratory Muscles Flashcards
What are the functions of the muscles of the rib cage?
increase thoracic dimensions during inspiration
support the thoracic cage
intercostal muscles prevent any recession or bulging of the intercostal spaces
inhibit the lungs natural tendency to collapse
What are the muscles of the rib cage?
serratus anterior serratus posteiror intercostals diaphragm pectoralis major and minor sternocleidomastoid scalenes transverse thoracis subcostals
Diaphragm
O: lumbar part- right and left crura, medial and lateral arcuate ligaments
costal part
sternal part
central tendon
Thoracic muscles of forced expiration
Internal intercostals transverse thoracis subcostals serratus posteiror infeiror latissimus dorsi
Abdominal muscles of forced expiration
external oblique
internal oblique rectus abdominus
transversus abdominus
Thoracic muscles of inspiration
external intercostals
pec major and minor
serratus posteiror and anterio r
levatores costarum
Inspiration muscles of the neck
stenocleidomastoid
scaleni
Lumbar inspiration muscles
quadratus lumborum
What are the movements of the thoracic cage?
Bucket handle
Pump Handle
What is the pump handle?
superior and anterior movement of the sternum
changes the dimensions of the thorax in the anteroposterior direction
when the ribs are depressed the sternum moves downwards and backwards
What is the bucket handle?
middle of the shafts tend to lower then the 2 ends
anterior ends the ribs being lower than the posterior ends
when the shafts are elevated the middles of the shafts move laterally
What does bucket handle depend on?
shape of articular facet
shape of ribs
orientations
whether they attach directly or indirectly to sternum
Functions of the diaphragm
primary muscle for inspiration
abdominal pressure for seeing, childbirth and weight
Action of diaphragm during respiration
descends as we breath
increases vertical diameter and decreases pressure
pushes on abdominal contents
