Gait Flashcards
What are the phases of gait?
Heel strike (initial contact) phase Stance (support) phase Loading response Mid-stance Terminal stance Pre-swing Toe off Swing (carry through) phase Initial swing Mid-swing Terminal swing
What is initial contact?
Often called heel strike as this area comes into first contact with the floor
What is the stance phase- loading response?
The loading response is the double support period between initial contact on one leg and toe off on the other leg.
What is terminal stance?
Is the time in which the heel begins to lift from the surface.
What is pre-swing?
Pre-swing occurs in conjunction with opposite heel strike.
What is the swing phase?
The swing phase occupies ~40% of the gait cycle
Feet become adjacent at around 50% of the swing phase

terminal swing
What is cadence?
steps per minute?
What is stride length?
distance between heel and toe
What is speed?
metres per second
what is cycle time?
how many seconds does it take to complete a full cycle, heel strike to heel strike on the same side
What does an overview of gait include?
cadence
