Movements of the Lumbar Spine Flashcards
What are the movements of the lumbar spine?
flexion
extension
rotation
side/lateral flexion
Where does flexion occur?
50-60 degrees
L4/5 and L5/S1
Where does extension occur?
30 dregrees
Where does rotation occur?
8-12 degrees in each direction
at each segmental area
less rotation at L5/S1
limitd by the orientaion of the facet joints
Where does side/lateral flexion occur?
25 degrees
What affects the lumbar spine range of motion?
age pathophysiology females tend to have a >RoM than men sitting < standing Prone: extension > standing
What are the ligaments of the lumbar spine?
anterior longitudinal ligament
posterior longitudinal ligament
ligament flavum
Anterior longitudinal ligament
occipital bone
sacrum
resists vertical separation of vertebrae and limits extension
anterior aspect of the vertebrae
Posterior longitudinal ligament
resists vertical separation of the posterior aspects of the body
lies in the vertebral canal
What are the joints?
Facet joints
zygapophyseal joints
lumbosacral joint
facet joints
plane is vertical inwards, synovial plane joint
Functions of the abdominals
trunk movement sitting from lying and getting out of bed coughing abdominal pressure for force expiration spinal stabilisation
lumbosacral joint
disc between the lower lumbar body and uppermost sacral vertebral body
Function of the lumbar region
support for abdomen
Function of sacral region
transmits weight to lower limbs through pelvic bones
framework for posterior aspect of pelvis
