Respiratory Flashcards
Agonal
Irregular, widely spaced gasps usually in a dying patient
Apnuestic
Prolonged inspiratory hold “fish breathing” occurs when there is damage to the pnuemotaxic center in the brain; severe brain injury
Ataxic
Chaotically irregular respirations. Brain injury or brainstem herniation
Biot respirations
Irregular pattern, rate and depth with intermittent patterns of apnea. Brain injury or brainstem herniation
Bradypnea
Unussually slow respirations
Central neurogenic hyperventilation
Tachypnea hyperpnea; rapid, deep respirations because of ICP or direct brain injury. results in respiratory alkalosis
Cheyne-stokes respirations
crescendo-decrescendo breathing with a period of apnea between cycles. Brain trauma
Hyperpnea
abnormally increased rate and depth of breathing,
Hypopnea
abnormally decreased rate and depth of breathing
Kussmal respirations
same as central neurogenic hyperventilation but caused by the body’s attempt in metabolic acidosis to rid itself of blood acetone via the lungs. Seen in DKA
