Bronchodilators - Antileukotriene - Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists - Singulair, Accolate
Uses: Prophylactic & long-term tx of asthma in adults and children > 12. Not for acute episodes, improvement usually seen over 1 week. Monitor liver enzymes, can be hepatotoxic. Adverse: HA, dizziness, GI complaints, insomnia. Adverse = non known.
Bronchodilators - Beta Adrenergic Agonists - Albuterol, Terbutaline Sulfate, Salmeterol, Spiriva
Uses: acute asthma, relief for bronchitis & emphysema, long-term control of chronic airway disease. Adverse = muscle tremors, anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, tachycardia. Do not use other bronchodilators or OTC meds w/ Terbutaline, as they may cause cardiovascular effects
Bronchodilaors - Anticholinergics - Atrovent
Uses: long-term mngt of bronchoconstriction, bronchospasms ass. w/ chronic bronchitis, asthma, COPD, emphysema. Not indicated for acute episodes due to delayed onset. Adverse = dry mouth, nasal congestion, heart palpitations, GI complaints, HA and anxiety.
Bronchodilators - Xanthine Derivatives - Theophylline
Uses: mild-mod asthma, chronic bronchitis, ephysema, COPD, no longer first line medication. Therapeutic lvl - 10-20, avoid caffeine. Contraindicated = known seizure disorder. Adverse = GI complaints, anorexia, tremors, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, tachycardia, angina, hypotension
