Antidepressant - SSRI - Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, Zoloft, Luvox, Effexor

A

Uses: Depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, OCD, panic attacks, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, anxiety disorder. Adverse = insomnia, weight gain, sexual dysfnxn, palpitations, HA, seizures, diaphoreses, GI. DO NOT GIVE W/ MAOI’s. Monitor liver fxn, Withdraw gradually

Antidepressant - MAOIs - Nardil, Parnate

A

Uses: Severe depression, psychosis, panic disorders. Adverse = dizziness, orthostatic, constipation, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, coma, tachycardia, diaphoresis, sexual dysfxn, weight gain. AVOID TYRAMINE (pickled, aged, fermented, or caffeinated) HTN CRISIS. Contraindicated = barbiturates, TCA’s, antihistamines, CNS depressants, OTC cold meds. Consult doc PRIOR to taking ANY new meds

Antidepressants - TCA’s - Elavil, Pamelor, Tofranil

A

Uses: Depression, depression r/t alcohol or cocaine w/drawl, chronic pain syndroms, anxiety, panic disorder, OCD. Tofranil = adjiunctive tx of childhood enuresis. Adverse = Ortho, HA, dry mouth, sedation, urinary retention, dysrhythmias, impotence, OD is lethal, Careful w/ suicidal pt’s, Contraindicated = hx of seizures, chronic cardiac disease.

Anti-Anxiety - Antihistamines - Hydroxyzine (Vistaril)

A

Uses: Anxiety disorders, pre & post-op sedation, N/V. GIVE IM! Monitor for sedative effect. Adverse = HA, hypotension, dry mouth, dizziness, hives

Anti-Anxiety - Benzodiazepines - Valium, Ativan, Xanax

A

Uses: Anxiety disorders, seizures, pre-op sedation, alcohol w/drawl. Contraindicated = narrow angle glaucoma, Adverse = drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, retrograde amnesia, hypotension, GI complaints, HA.

Antipsychotic - Phenothiazines - ChlorpromaZINE (Thorazine), FluphenaZINE

A

Uses: Psychotic disorders, schizo, mania, Tourette’s. Adverse effects multiple, choose for specific pt. Thorazine = pronounced ortho. Adverse = extrapyramidal runs, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, seizures, anorexia, urinary retention, dry mouth, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, sedation, tar dive dyskinesia.

Antipsychotic - Nonphenothizines - Haldol

A

Uses: acute & chronic psychosis, schizo resistant to other meds, Tourette’s, child w/ severe behavior issues who are combative, suppress narcotic w/drawl. Contraindicated = narrow angle glaucoma, severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac disease, or Parkinsons. Adverse = tachycardia, seizures, urinary retention, resp. depression, laryngospasm, neuromalignant syndrome, dysrhythmias.
