Otic agents usually given in combo w/ steroids to increase effectiveness
Antibacterials - Cortisporin Otic, Ciprodex, Cirpro HC Otic, Floxin Otic, CiproDex
Uses: Outer & middle ear infections. Pull pinna up and back on adults, down and back for children < 3. Position pt supine, affected ear up. Remain supine 5 min after med. Med should not be cold, room temp. Adverse = ear irritation, local singing, burning, dizziness.
Antifungals - Cortic, Acetasol HC
Uses: Outer & middle ear fungal infections. Pull pinna up and back on adults, down and back for children < 3. Position pt supine, affected ear up. Remain supine 5 min after med. Med should not be cold, room temp. Adverse = ear irritation, local singing, burning, dizziness.
Analgesic/Decongestant - Benzocaine & Antipyrine
Uses: mild to mod. pain associated w/ outer or middle ear infections. Pull pinna up and back on adults, down and back for children < 3. Position pt supine, affected ear up. Remain supine 5 min after med. Med should not be cold, room temp. Adverse = ear irritation, local singing, burning, dizziness.
