Infection with staphylococcus aureus or streptococcus

A
Gradual

A
High fever > 38 Appears unwell and anxious Brassy cough Thick, mucopurulent exudate Tracheal tenderness

When does it typically occur?
A
Deterioration after viral URTI

Why is there a risk of airway occlusion?
A
Exudate not cleared by coughing

How is it managed?
A
Early intubation to allow suctioning of secretions and improved ventilation
Treat with IV antibiotics
