Respiratory Flashcards
Ventilation
air in and out of trachea, bronchi, and lungs (breathing in)
Diffusion
process of moving and exchanging o2 acquired during ventilation and co2 waste
Perfusion
process of supplying o2 blood to lungs and organ systems via blood vessels
respiration
process where cells throughout body use o2 aerobically
hypoxia
hypoxemia: decreased o2 in arterial blood, hypoxia = severe form of hypoxemia at the tissue level
hypercapnia
increased co2 in blood
role of respiratory system in immunity
acting as the body’s first line of defense against inhaled pathogens
pleural cavity + pleural fluid
cavity: double membrane - pleuras
fluid: in between two membranes
interplerual pressure
negative pressure always needed to keep lungs inflated, if pleural cavity gets compromised lungs will give out
gas exchange in lungs
occurs in: alveoli, o2 diffuses across pulmonary membrane into capillary blood, hemoglobin binds to o2 for transport, release of o2
hypersensitivity in context of asthma
asthma is a reaction to hypersensitivity
asthma
condition where bronchial tubes react to a certain stimuli by becoming inflamed
asthma epidemiology
1/3 has it, higher in children
asthma symptoms
coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness
asthma triggers
allergens, exercise, tobacco smoke, cold air, airway infections, medications
