Malaria Flashcards
Vector
Female anopheles mosquito
Parasite
Protozoan known as plasmodium parasite
Latent
Mosquito bite to first symptoms
Incubation
Onset of infection to symptoms
Serology
Antibody detection
Elimination
Interruption of local transmission on specified malaria parasite
Eradication
Permanent reduction to zero
Uncomplicated malaria
Flu like symptoms
Complicated malaria
Seizures, coma, respiratory distress, kidney, liver failure
Etiology
One of the oldest human diseases, most deaths are in children under 5 in Africa, you cannot be immune from the infection, malaria = endemic (regular occurance) in all countries
Vector
Female anopheles mosquito, bite blood for heme (iron containing compound in hemoglobin)
Cycle - pre erythrocytic phase
- mosquito bites human
- sporozoites enter liver
- replication
- liver cells rupture and merozoites they get released
Cycle - blood stage
**known as sexual cycle
1. merozietes produce gametocytes
Cycle - phase in mosquito
- mosquito ingests gametocytes via bite
- gametocytes mate and undergo meiosis
- migrates and forms oocyst
- sporozoites develop
Public health interventions
Vaccinations via mosqurix however it is not efficient, pharmacologic preventative treatment
