Respiratory Flashcards
What is respiration?
A system that refers to movement of gases in and out of the lungs, exchange of gases between alveoli and capillaries in lungs and capillaries and tissues in the body
What is the upper respiratory tract?
The neck and head
Nose>nasopharynx>oropharynx>
laryngopharynx>larynx
What is the lower respiratory tract?
The thoracic cavity
Trachea>main bronchi>bronchial tree>alveoli *lungs
What is the nasal cavity?
Has mucous membranes to warm, moisturize air and remove guck
What is the pharynx composed of?
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What is the larynx?
A cartilaginous box that contains the vocal cords
What is the epiglottis?
In the Larynx, blocks the entrance to the trachea when swallowing
What is the trachea?
It splits to form the main bronchi
What are the lungs and bronchial tree?
The bronchus enters a lung then further divides to form the bronchial tree
What are bronchioles?
They have smooth muscles in walks and lobules and get smaller to form alveoli
What are alveoli?
Grapelike clusters at the end of bronchioles
What is the tidal volume (TD)?
The amount of air moved in a normal breath at rest
What is the vital capacity (VC)
The maximum amount of air that can be moved by the lungs
What is the composition of air?
A mixture of gases which includes N, O, H, CO2
What is gas exchange?
It happens between the alveoli/capillaries in the lungs and between capillaries/tissue in the body
